In compliance with Article 32, subsection 2 of the GIA Constitution, the Secretariat officially declares the initiation of the election process to fill crucial positions within the association. The call for nominations has been extended to all members, signifying the imperative to appoint new leaders after the conclusion of the current Board’s two-year term, scheduled to conclude on December 14 following the last Annual General Assembly (AGA).

The open positions available for contention are as follows:

1. Presidential/Board Chairman Position – 1
2. Members of the Board representing Life Insurance Business – 4
3. Members of the Board representing Non-Life Business – 4

This year’s nomination phase has revealed a strong willingness among members to actively engage in steering the association’s course. The enthusiasm displayed by aspirants underscores a commitment to leveraging unique perspectives and skills, unlocking new possibilities, and contributing to the success of both the Association and the broader Ghanaian Insurance Industry.

A total of 11 nominations were received, distributed as follows:

1. President/Board Chairman Position – 1
2. Board Members to represent Life Insurance Business – 4
3. Board Members to represent Non-life Business – 6

It is evident that the aspiring President will run uncontested. However, in adherence to the GIA constitution, the candidate must secure a 50% + 1 vote to be eligible for election. Similarly, each of the four aspirants for the Life Insurance Board must secure at least 50% + 1 vote to be eligible. Notably, only four out of the six aspirants for the Non-Life Board members will be eligible to serve, making this category the most competitive.

As the election process unfolds, these candidates bring a wealth of experience and expertise, each aspiring to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the GIA and the broader insurance landscape in Ghana. Now, let’s provide brief introductions to the dedicated aspirants:

Mr. Seth Aklasi is a strategic business leader with over 20 years of experience in the Finance and Insurance industry. His transformative and proven track record in the Ghanaian insurance industry has been core to the ascending growth of Donewell Insurance Limited since he joined in 2015 as the Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Henry Bukari brings over 20 years of experience in insurance underwriting and marketing. With an MBA in Marketing from the University of Leicester, UK, and a diverse educational background, he has been a beneficiary of numerous foreign and local professional development courses.

Mr. Ernest Frimpong, currently serving as the CEO of Bedrock Insurance Company Limited, holds the prestigious title of Chartered Insurer and is an Associate Member of both the Chartered Insurance Institute of the United Kingdom (UK) and the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG).

Mrs. Mercy Boampong, with over 22 years of industry experience, joined Serene Insurance Limited in 2022. She has assumed various senior-level positions and has been actively involved in industry technical committees aimed at policy interventions for economic development and expansion of the insurance industry.

Mrs. Akosua Ansah Antwi is a Lawyer from the Ghana Law School and a Chartered Insurer from the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK. With over 22 years of progressive insurance industry experience in various business and team leadership roles, she has a proven track record of transforming and leading operational teams to deliver high performance.

Mr. Oliver Akubia, a seasoned insurance practitioner and business leader with over 21 years of working experience, is a Chartered Insurer from the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana.

Benjamin, with a career in insurance since 1991, joined Activa International Insurance in 2009, rising to the roles of Chief Underwriting Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and eventually Deputy Managing Director of operations in April 2018. He has actively contributed to industry committees, including the ECOWAS Brown Card Technical Committee and the Ghana Insurers Association’s Accident Committee. With an Executive MBA from the University of Ghana Business School and a Chartered Insurer designation from the UK’s Chartered Institute of Insurance, Benjamin brings over 28 years of diverse experience to his current role, also serving as the Company Secretary for Activa International Insurance.

Mr. Tavona Biza, a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries UK with an MBA from the University of Cape Town, has been a part of the Old Mutual family for over ten years. His extensive experience includes holding various roles in the Zimbabwean, South African, and Malawian markets, contributing significantly to the positioning of Old Mutual as a leading life insurer in Malawi.

Iddrisu Nashiru is a seasoned Insurance Practitioner with 17 years of experience and is a dynamic Business Development and Distribution Strategist. His leadership at Hollard Life resulted in the company becoming the fastest growing in 2021, winning prestigious awards in 2022. A chartered insurer, Nashiru is actively involved in industry associations, serving on the boards of the Ghana Insurance Association and the Africa-Europe Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while also advocating for financial inclusion, youth development, and innovation.

Mr. Eric Ato Botchway, a Chartered Accountant with over 16 years of experience in the insurance industry, is the Managing Director of Donewell Life Insurance LTD. His expertise spans financial reporting, budgeting, investment management, and strategy, making him a results-oriented and accomplished finance professional.

Sheriff is a highly experienced financial services professional with over 20 years in sales and executive leadership, holding the title of Chartered Insurer. Notably, he successfully led the restructuring of distribution, sales, and marketing operations at Unique Life Insurance and MiLife Insurance, driving substantial premium income growth. Currently, he chairs the Sales and Marketing Technical Committee at the Ghana Insurers Association and contributes to the Client Rescue Fund Committee at the National Insurance Commission, while holding extensive international training experience.
